Car Security Services

When selecting a car security system it is worth considering what additional services are available.

Many telecommunications companies and security firms are getting on board with offering tracking and recovery of stolen vehicles; or tracking services for passenger security.

Many car security systems include the ability to send an intruder alert message to a key chain transmitter fob carried by the driver, giving them the option to disable the vehicle to prevent its removal.

If your car is converted, and out of range of disabling the engine, then GPS tracking capability is proving a very effective means of recovery.

Onboard GPS Receivers

If the car has an onboard GPS navigation system, the receiver is connected to the alarm-system control unit to send location data to the police or other authorised agent to track your car at all times, or only if certain sensors trip the control unit.

Car Tracking & Recovery Services

Many telecommunications companies and security companies are now offering car tracking services. This has proven very successful in recovering cars within 24 hours.

These services are not cheap to install or subscribe, so look for services that meet the toughest insurance industry security standard, Thatcham's Category 5.

For example, A BT Trackit Unit for your car will cost $515 [GBP299.99] and installation will cost another $255 [149 pounds]). PLUS an annual service charge of $255.

BT claims the service is "20 percent cheaper than a leading provider of Category 5 products" such as Tracker Network.

Car Insurance & Alarm Systems

Thatchcam - The Motor Insurance Repair Research Centre (MIRRC) tests and approves 'aftermarket' security systems; publish lists of approved products and systems. Some insurers insist that a Thatcham approved security system be fitted as a condition of cover on certain high-risk cars. Other insurers offer discounts if you install Thatcham-approved systems. Check before buying insurance.
